Property Description

Villa Batujimbar is one of Bali’s most extraordinary residences, with a rich and colourful history, a grand ‘Bali style’ design pedigree, and a celebrity house guest list that includes ruling monarchs and rock legends. Within its enchanting gardens - situated right by the beach in Sanur's exclusive Batujimbar Estate - are nine bedrooms, multiple living and dining pavilions, and a 20-metre pool and tennis court. There is direct access onto a glorious white sandy swimming beach from the gardens, and Sanur's many restaurants and boutiques are a five-minute walk away. Villa Batujimbar is the perfect choice for family get-togethers and groups of friends, and a captivating setting for weddings.

If anywhere epitomizes the authentic 'Bali style' that has enraptured so many over the past decades, it is Villa Batujimbar - a treasure-filled travel destination in itself. This sublime property, which sits on over an acre of beachfront land, was originally the home of long-time Bali resident and Australian artist Donald Friend who, in 1970, invited Sri Lankan ‘tropical modernism' architect Geoffrey Bawa - celebrated for breaking down barriers and creating harmonious relationships between buildings and landscape - to collaborate in developing the beachfront estate. The Balinese palaces at Amlapura and Klungkung plus the famed water gardens of Tirta Gangga influenced his ideas - clearly expressed in the two-storey moat-encircled Lembu Bale that commands centre stage within the meticulously designed gardens.

The lower gallery of the Lembu Bale houses the current Australian owner's astonishing collection of Balinese art - including the Donald Friend painting he bought from the artist himself on first visiting Villa Batujimbar in 1972. This private collection rivals the island's finest galleries and museums and is a unique feature of the villa. Guests are welcome to view the collection on special request. Yet art is not confined to this space alone throughout the living and sleeping pavilions you’ll come across architectural treasures, rare artifacts, painted antique doors and windows, and heirloom paintings that reveal the owner’s passion for Balinese art and craftsmanship. And within the expansive gardens are myriad moss-encrusted statuary and intricately carved stone reliefs. Bali's beauty shines in the materials used too – vaulted alang-alang thatched roofs, lava stone steps, coral walls, and terrazzo and teak wood floors.

With such a fascinating history, no wonder Villa Batujimbar has attracted celebrity guests over the years. Today’s guests are following in the footsteps of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall (who got married here), Sting (who gave an impromptu concert), Yoko Ono, and members of the Thai and Malaysian and British royal families. In such splendid surroundings, and pampered by a team of staff that includes a private chef, personal butlers and villa manager, you can look forward to royal treatment too.

Location Information

Villa Batujimbar accords guests an extraordinary location right on the edge of Sanur Beach: a private gate leads directly from the villa gardens onto the footpath that stretches the length of the white sand swimming beach in both directions. Privacy and peace are the promise of its privileged setting within the exclusive Batujimbar Estate, yet just 150 metres away is the buzz of Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur's main street, with its throng of restaurants, bars and boutiques. Guests may pick up Bali's famous Jenggala ceramics (originally created in the villa's grounds decades ago), enjoy an espresso at Cafe Batu Jimbar, snack on sushi at Ryoshi, or dance to live music at Three Monkeys - all within a five-minute walk. There is a good choice of water sports along the beach, a nine-hole golf course within a few kilometres, and the delights of dive and surf-spot Nusa Lembongan a half-hour boat ride away.

0.15 km to Sanur shops
3 km to Bali Beach Golf Course
15 km to Seminyak and Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS)
17 km to Kuta
21 km to Bali Marine & Safari Park
24 km to Ubud
52 km to Candidasa

• There is a 9-hole golf course at the Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur, but golf enthusiasts might want to travel further afield to Bali Golf and Country Club in Nusa Dua for 18-hole courses.
• Take the kids to Jenggala Ceramics (now based in nearby Jimbaran but originally started in the grounds of Batujimbar Estate itself) where they can glaze their own pottery while you shop for special souvenirs of this famous Bali-ware.
An annual international kite festival takes place at Padang Galak beach (just north of Sanur) every July. Traditional Balinese giant kites up to ten metres in length are made and flown competitively by teams from different villages around Bali. Originally, these kites were intended to send a message to the Hindu Gods to create abundant crops and harvests. Aside from the festival itself, visitors will see many giant kites being flown in this area from June through to August.
• Saba Bay horse riding has a special horse riding track (suitable for beginners) on a beautiful black sandy beach overlooking the Indian Ocean and Nusa Penida Island.
• There are several dive operators around Sanur, but this area is more suited to beginners or refresher courses. The better dive sites are further North in Tulumben, or out on the islands of Nusa Penida and Lembongan.
• Explore Bali's backroads, lakes, volcanoes, forests and beaches on the back of a Harley Davidson bike with Island Biker Tours. Full day Harley tours, customized tours or shorter joy rides can all be accommodated.
• If you are a bold and brave bargain hunter, a spree within the heart of Bali's bustling provincial capital is an exciting and rewarding experience. Visit Denpasar's vibrant markets, where everything and anything is available. Pasar Badung, Denpasar's colourful central market, is the largest and oldest market in Bali. Here’s where the local people shop, and each of the market's three floors is dedicated to different products.
Le Mayeur Museum in Sanur is the former home of noted Belgian impressionist Adrian Jean Le Mayeur. The building is now a museum which, as well as showcasing the artist’s work, gives visitors an insight into what it must have been like to be one of Bali’s very first expats. Although in need of some maintenance, this remains one of Bali’s true hidden treasures.
• From the roaming Sumatran tigers and elephants in the jungle of Sumatra, to the hippos and cheetahs at Lake Manyara, the Safari Journey at Bali Safari and Marine Park offers a unique adventure. There’s also a Fresh Water Aquarium at the Park, as well as the Hanoman Court, which introduces exotic birds and orangutans, and is the main stage for animal educational and entertainment shows.
